Parthenon 1687
Parthenon, 1687 destruction, engraving
On 26 September 1687 the Parthenon sustained a direct hit from a Venetian shell and the powder stored there exploded. Most of the interior walls of the temple, apart from the west end, were destroyed, bringing the frieze down with them, and taking with them the entablature above and about half of the metopes on those sides.
