Restored group of Athena and Marsyas by Myron
The Goddess had invented the pipes but was displeased by the appearance of her face as she played and threw them down, to be claimed by the delighted satyr.
A dithyramb-play on the subject by Melanippides may have been the occasion of the dedication of the group on the Acropolis.
    Original of about 450 BCE
