Combat between Diomedes and Aeneas. Diomedes advances from the left and wounds Aeneas with a spear. Aeneas has drawn his sword but falls, helpless.
Athena encourages Diomedes.
Athena wears a thick chiton, a himation of 'Ionic' fashion, the aegis, and an Attic helmet with a frontlet but neither nasal nor cheek-pieces. The gorgoneum is a reduced version of that on Memnon's shield; red tongues, no fangs. The chiton, with its bands of pattern, may be compared with the less elaborate one worn by Athena on the painter's hydria in London. The eyelids are bordered with brown.
