Alea is an alternate name for Tegea in Arcadia which was founded by Aleus. After Aleus came to the throne he built the Sanctuary of Athena Alea. The sanctuary of Athena Alea was respected from early days by all Peloponnesians and afforded peculiar safety to the suppliants of Athena Alea. Pausanias and Chryseis, the priestess of Hera, also went to Tegea as suppliant of Athena Alea. At Mantinea, near Tripolis, there was a Sanctuary and an image of Athena Alea. On the road from the city of Amyclae that leads to Therapne was a wooden image of Athena Alea. |
